Habs hope to punch postseason ticket against rival Maple Leafs

04/10/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Montreal Canadiens aren't playing like a team bound for the playoffs. That's because after their last performance, they aren't yet.

The Canadiens will try to fix that tonight at the Bell Centre in a meeting with the Toronto Maple Leafs that closes out the regular season for both clubs.

Montreal has gone 3-4-3 over its last 10 contests since a six-game winning streak. The club needed just one point on Thursday at Carolina to clinch a third straight trip to the postseason, but instead lost a 5-2 decision.

The Canadiens are tied with Boston for sixth in the Eastern Conference with 87 points, though the Bruins have a game in hand. Philadelphia and the New York Rangers are just a point back in eighth with a game to play as well.

Brian Gionta and Marc-Andre Bergeron both scored and Jaroslav Halak finished with 28 saves versus the Hurricanes for Montreal, which has lost two straight and is 20-16-4 at home this season.

"We didn't execute the game plan, we cheated, we gave way too many chances, we didn't play a good defensive game," Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin said.

Montreal will try to rebound tonight against a Toronto club that will finish last in the East. The Maple Leafs have 72 points and will post their lowest total since they finished with 1997-98 season with 69. Toronto will also miss the playoffs for a fifth season in a row, extending the longest postseason drought in franchise history.

The Maple Leafs have lost three in a row since a 9-3-1 stretch and have scored just two goals over their current skid. One of them came on Wednesday in a 5-1 setback to the New York Rangers.

Dion Phaneuf had the tally at the 8:09 mark in the third period and Jonas Gustavsson allowed all five goals, including three in the first period, on 32 shots. Toronto fell to 11-21-8 on the road this season.

"We're making a lot of rookie mistakes," Maple Leafs forward Viktor Stalberg said. "We're turning too many pucks over."

The Maple Leafs have recorded at least a point in all five meetings with the Canadiens this year. They are 2-0-3 in that span and have won three of their last four at the Bell Centre.
